So you’ve got the Sixth World core book, you’ve rolled up a runner or two, and now you’re wondering what’s actually worth buying next. Ask around and you’ll keep hearing the same answer: the Sixth World Companion. In one community thread about “essential” 6th Edition books, it came up more than any other add-on, and it wasn’t close.
It’s not hard to see why. Catalyst put it out back in May 2022 as their main player book, and it’s basically a toolbox for making characters. You get new ways to build a runner besides the standard method, new metatypes, a big pile of qualities and some optional rules to tweak how your table plays.
What I like is that it works for both ends of the table. If you’ve got a brand-new player who’s staring at the core book like it’s a corp contract, there are ready-made builds and gear bundles with simple costs, so they can get to the fun part faster. If you’ve got a veteran who wants to build something weird and specific, there are options for that too. One player called it “the most universally applicable” supplement, and that sounds about right.
Is it for everyone? Nope. There’s no new magic in here and no real new gear, so if your mage is hungry for spells or your street sam wants new toys, look elsewhere. And if you already know exactly what you want to play and don’t care about unusual metatypes, you might not get much out of it.
But if you’ve got new players coming in, or you’re just tired of building every runner the same way, this is the one I’d pick up second.
