Blob and Toad – Marvel Double Datafile

Here’s another two villains you’re likely familiar with – for use with your Marvel Heroic Roleplaying…

Here’s another two villains you’re likely familiar with. Both the Blob and Toad are classic X-Men villains. They’ve both been members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants as well as Freedom Force. You saw a more modern take on Toad in the first X-Men movie, and the Blob showed up in Wolverine Origins.

The Blob is a very straightforward foe. He’s big, he’s tough, and once he sets himself somewhere, he’s very hard to move. He’s an excellent mook, distraction or part of a supervillain team. You can also use him as a living obstacle. The heroes have to get to the power core before the timer ticks down? What happens when the Blob blocks the narrow hallway?

The Toad is a classic stooge or number 2. He’s got a dependent mentality that helps him loyally latch onto anyone who shows him a shred of kindness or belonging. He’s changed far more over the years than other characters. He’s a lot smarter and a bit more confident than he used to be, and may even form his own team. His powers have also developed further along than just being an excellent leaper. His tongue now stretches out further than his own fight, with incredible strength and maneuverability. They also act as a pheromone delivery system, giving him powers of suggestion over others.

In House of M, Toad is a member of Wolverine’s elite Red Guard, and an expert SHIELD Agent. Blob is a NYPD Officer and member of the Mauraders. He’s with the team when they take on Captain Britain and the rest of Excaliber. If you’re not heading in that direction, he’d make an excellent member of the Genoshan guard.

Apocalypse – Marvel Villain File

Apocalypse is one of the oldest living mutants, if not the oldest. He’s been called the first, and has a bit of a god complex. His plans for mutant dominance over the world have involved the X-Men and more, time and time again. To use him properly in the Marvel RPG, remember that he’s not just muscle; he’s a mastermind. His plans are subtle and often work out over many generations. His immediate goals may not have a clear tie to his long range goals, so you should feel free to use him in a situation where he may seem out of place.

In House of M, he’s the ruler of Egypt and in league with Magneto. He has control over most of Africa, but up until recently has avoided Wakanda. In the comics he finally attacks, with Red Guard member Nightcrawler, Horsemen Angel and Iceman, as well as the mercenary Sabretooth. He’s met not just by the Black Panther and his love Storm, but by by Namor, and Blackbolt as well.

That’s pretty Epic, but in my game the players need to take center stage. I’ve decided that Wakanda has secretly been funding the Human Resistance for years. The players have been sent a request for aid as Wakandan spies have been tipped off to a possible attack. If the players want to add Black Panther and Storm to their rosters, they have to act fast.

I’m expanding the horsemen line-up slightly for this. Using the Angel from Plot Points as Death, Grey Gargoyle from the Basic Game as Famine, and my own Iceman as Pestilence. As a special surprise I’m using the Invisible Woman as War, somehow saved by Apocalypse from the accident that killed her in House of M.

You might notice that he has the Invulnerable SFX, even though he only has Superhuman Durability d10. It was an odd choice for me, but it seems that Apocalypse can shrug off a lot of damage, but also tends to take hits and recover. It should give Watchers more choices in play.

Iceman Editable Datafile

Bobby Drake is a pivotal hero in the Marvel Universe. He was on the very first X-men team, and has remained a key character ever since. Even when not on an active X-Men team, he soon found himself involved with the Champions, Defenders and X-Factor.

One of his key personality traits is that he’s very open with his emotions. It’s easy to tell when he’s comfortable, upset, or attracted to another individual. Many have interpreted this an immaturity, but Bobby can be one of the most grounded heroes around, especially in a fight.

Speaking of being in a fight, he’s also an immensely powerful mutant. He was selected as one of The Twelve who would shape the history of the planet. He’s survived missing limbs and a hole in his chest. He’s also managed to turn to vapor and back. The only problem is that he’s not really confident in the limits of his own power. Other people have shown him what he can do, but (for the most part) he’s holding back. It’s reflected on his sheet by a few d10s and the Unleashed SFX.

In my House of M campaign, he’s serving as a horseman of Apocalypse, but the heroes will have the opportunity to wake him up and recruit him onto their team.

Magneto – Marvel Editable Villain File

Call him a saint, leader, terrorist or madman, there’s something just magnetic about this character. He’s been a member of the X-Men and the world’s greatest villain. He’s a pivotal part of the House of M, Apocalypse’s 13, Onslaught Saga and the Secret Wars events. He has very strong ties with Professor X, Mystique, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Polaris, to name just a few. Read his full history on the Marvel Universe wiki.

This particular version was written to represent him shortly before the House of M event. He’s quite powerful, but like most villains, benefits from having a few lackeys around. If you’re running the House of M storyline, it begins with the heroes assaulting Genosha, but they don’t get anywhere before Scarlet Witch changes the world. I wanted something a tad more dynamic, so I had Magneto assault the SHIELD Hellicarrier outside New York City in retaliation for SHIELD’s actions in part 2 of Break Out. I recommend choosing mainly minor villains to fight with him, so there isn’t an excess of d12s being rolled. I paired him with Diamond Lil, Mystique, an escaped Mandrill, and a mentally controlled Spider-Woman (who was on the SHIELD Hellicarrier).

Juggernaut and Diamond Lil – Double Datafile

Two new invulnerable Watcher characters for you today! They’ve both been on either side of the law and can be used in a lot of circumstances. Beyond that, they don’t have too much in common, and I don’t really suggest using them in the same encounter.

I’ve found that enemies with the Invulnerable SFX can quickly frustrate some players, but they can quickly move past that when they see how quickly those same enemies can be taken out with emotional stress or complications. However, having too many in one fight just seems like you’re limiting the options of the players who like to talk with their guns.

Neither character features prominently in House of M. Juggernaut was a mutant being pursued by marauders Britain, who helped Captain Britain, Psylocke and the Phoenix repair a hole in reality. If you want something more adversarial, you could easily drop them into the Red Guard, or as civilians.

Mystique and Layla Miller – Double Datafile

Here’s a double datafile that Watcher’s should have fun with. Mystique is a classic Marvel villain. Tied closely with the X-Men, especially Magneto, Sabretooth, Nightcrawler and Rogue. Even if you’re not into comics, you probably recognize her, as she’s been in every X-Men cartoon and movie, as well as a host of video games. Her primary power is to shapeshift, but you can see from the datafile that this power is represented in many different ways. In fact, I’d say she’s an excellent character for a player to redeem and try to make a hero out of.

If you’re running House of M, like me, then she’s a key part of Magneto’s Red Guard. She also becomes part of the strike team against the House of M towards the end. Should players be interested, you could use this as the base for a Hero file.

Layla Miller, in contrast, takes up a lot less room on this sheet. This Rookie NPC represents Layla as she appears in House of M specifically. Since then her character has been aged, and her powers expanded quite a bit. In my House of M game, she’s almost like a mobile asset, kind of like Foggy Nelson in the Breakout Mini-Event. I wanted her to be able to be targeted though, to play up the What If? quality of the game. The heroes have to keep her safe, if they want her to be around for the final confrontation.

Cloak – Marvel Datafile

Many of the heroes in Marvels 80s lineup were a little dark. It was a gritty time for many forms of entertainment, and Cloak was a hero who literally embodied this ideal. I mean, he’s made of darkness, and darkness feeds on bad people. Plus he hates drugs, and his partner wore an impossibly tight suit. He’s managed to survive the last two decades despite that, teaming with Spider-Man, the X-Men, and more recently the Avengers.

He was featured in the Marvel Event House of M, which is the next big crossover after the BreakOut Event included the Marvel basic game. I have a few more key House of M characters coming up, so stick around!

Silver Samurai – Marvel Editable Datafile

Silver Samurai is probably best known by fans for his appearances on the old X-Men cartoon show. This sometimes villain, sometimes hero has had a much larger history in the comics however, ranging from crime lord, to Hydra bodyguard, to a premier member of the Japanese Super Group ‘Big Hero Six’.

You’ll find statistics for him as a Minor Villain in the Marvel Heroic Basic set, but should a player choose to unlock him for XP, he’ll need a bit of work to bring him up to snuff. Luckily I’ve done that work for you.

Madame Hydra and the Hand

It may seem like an odd pairing, but this grouping is ripped from the pages of New Avengers. If you’re going to continue the events as they roughly happened after the Break Out! Mini Event, then you’ll soon find these two in Japan, helping to set the stage for Secret Invasion way down the line.

Madame Hydra is a near ageless villain devoted to, you guessed it, Hydra. She’s been a constant villain of Captain America, The Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and was even once married to Wolverine!

The Hand is an order of ninjas who worship a demon. They’ve actual come into conflict with Madame Hydra before (a fact that heroes could try to exploit), and they have a very rich history with Daredevil.

These are Watcher files, as opposed to my last two files. Heroes might try to redeem Madame Hydra and unlock her with XP. Feel free to edit the file, following the instructions in the Marvel Basic game, and make sure to remove the Hand from the sheet. They are their own mob (not a sidekick power set), no matter how much your player begs.

Deadpool – Marvel Editable Datafile

Who’s got two regenerating thumbs and is your favorite crazy assassin? This guy!

Deadpool’s abilities haven’t changed too much over the years, but the way that writers treat him has. I’ve tried to create a version here that rewards players for playing into Deadpool’s madness, while slowly building the doom pool as a result. Hopefully, people can play him as either a crazed loon or as lovable satire with the same sheet. Check out his full history on the Marvel Database.
