Yep, you heard right!  Contest #3 – Your Best NPC has closed.  We’ll post the winners in one week.   Drum roll…

All right fellow gamers, we need just one more NPC to finish off the Your Best NPC contest.  Even though we only need one more to end the contest, I’ll take all submissions after that one until the end of the day.  Place your entry here!

NPCs that stick in the minds of the players are simply one of the best story-telling tools you can have in your gaming tool box.  Aside from statless non-wonders to be exploited and stepped on, NPCs can and do provide so many uses in any game.  Since there are so many NPCs in the game world, I think it’s important to have a few non-vanilla types on hand, ready to spice up your story.

So, let’s keep this one simple. For this contest, I’m looking for your best NPC.  Place your entry here!

It’s time to announce the winner for the Drakes contest!  The contest consisted of 20 entries in the form of comments, all describing either a character, enemy, monster, NPC, adventure idea or encounter idea.  Interestingly, almost all of the entries were of adventure ideas.

Honorable mention goes out to NonCharon and Peter Steven King (comments #2 and #4).

The entry that got the most votes from the Stuffer Shack crew was from KyckRicky:

As Colin pointed out, “I love the thought of giving the PCs every chance to define their morality, and the morality of the party,” I couldn’t agree more.

I’ve said it before – I love contests, especially when they’re free.  Win these large-sized drakes, either as monsters to fight or beasts to ride.  All you have to do is leave a comment of your best idea for a character concept, adventure, encounter, NPC, enemy or monster.  It’s just like the last contest, except this time you only need a couple of sentences in a comment on this page.

• Your comment pitch must be 2, 3, or 4 sentences.
• Enter as often as you like.
• All entries must be original, and may eventually be expanded for latest posts.
• The contest will last for two weeks or 20 comments (whichever takes longer).
• It will be judged by Stuffer Shack staff members: Charisma, Max, Colin, the Red Knight, as well as the winner of the last contest, Thomas Charlton (sorry bud, you can’t enter this one).

It’s time to announce the winners for the Minotaur contest!

Before we begin, let me throw a couple of things out there.  First, none of the Steal This… entries from the authors of Stuffer Shack were considered; only readers.  Secondly, none of the pictures accompanying the entries had any influence; only content was considered.   Now, with that being said, here they are:

3rd place wins the Adventurer’s Bundle:

• “Fire in the Black,” the story of Teig Makusy – Great setup for someone to play the brooding loner with one glimmering reason for hope.  Not many people can pull off this type of character, so this should help.  I especially like the amount of detail in describing how he’s gotten to his current state.

2nd place also wins the Adventurer’s Bundle:

• Rescuing Racel – It’s a great setup for an adventure with a pretty original take on the damsel in distress, but a strong damsel.  I think it’s a great player’s aid and adventure hook, immediately calling the party to action.  It could very easily be what it seems – the wife imprisoned by her lycan husband – or it could be something entirely different – is the whole village in on it?  I would love to run this adventure.

1st place wins the huge-sized minotaur, and also the Adventurer’s Bundle:

• Anchor, the Aquatic Warforged – Great NPC idea, and well-characterized.  It speaks volumes to me because of its originality, opening doors for PCs not usually opened in a fantasy setting (venturing underwater).  On top of that, there are a few different ways of integrating this NPC into a campaign.  Really, a great NPC.

Last month I put up a contest allowing for readers to win a free huge-sized minotaur.  All you have to do is submit either a character background, adventure or encounter idea, NPC, monster, or enemy (see the Steal This… page for examples).

Well, so far I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on the site, but few contest entries.  I know that Stuffer Shack is relatively brand new, and that I shouldn’t expect a lot, but it seems that the entries have stopped coming in.

So, I figure it’s time to sweeten the deal.  The rules of the contest remain the same, but the rewards are being increased.

• 1st place: Huge-sized minotaur, and Adventurer’s Bundle
• 2nd place: Adventurer’s Bundle
• 3rd place: Also the Adventurer’s Bundle
• Everyone that enters: For every entry that gets posted, you’ll earn $1.00 credit toward any purchase from the Store.  Submit several entries and you could get stuff from the Store for free (all credit earned, up to the purchase price, will be refunded after your purchase).

Call me crazy, cause I just might be.  I simply want to get the shelves stocked up with “steal this” material, and I can’t do it alone.

So join in. All it takes is for you to submit your current character, your favorite character, maybe an encounter you just went through, or an adventure you just ran.  NPCs and enemies are a dime a dozen, too.  Just make sure your entries are about 500 words each (a few paragraphs). That’s it – it’s easy!

Welcome to the grand opening of the STUFFER SHACK! If you haven’t looked around yet, let me tell you what we’re all about.  We’re all about character backgrounds for you to steal.  We’re all about adventure and encounter ideas for you to steal. NPCs, enemies, and monsters are lying around, too!  Coming soon, we’ll have a Next Level Gaming column, with articles on how you might take your game to the next level, whether you’re a player or GM.  Basically, the Stuffer Shack is simply a resource for you and your role playing games.

Why Stuffer Shack? Well, I need a creative outlet, and this turned out to be right up my alley.  That’s it.

FREE CONTEST!

Do you have any huge-sized minotaurs?  Would you like one?  I may be kind of creative at times, but even I can’t think up everything.  That’s why we’re having a contest, to bulk up our shelves and thank you for coming in.

Here are the rules:

• Submit an original adventure idea, encounter idea, character background, NPC, enemy, or monster (what are you playing/running right now?).  Don’t worry about stat cards or pictures, as they aren’t necessary.  Take a look at some of the stuff here for examples (submissions for all games/genres).
• Please make your submission between 300 and 700 words (a few paragraphs up to a page).
• If your submission has already been posted on your website, either rewrite it or let me know (so I can rewrite it).  This is to avoid duplicate content issues with page indexing.
• All eligible submissions should be posted.  You will be cited as the author and the article will be linked to your website (if you have one).
• Enter as many times as you want.   Those few that have made submissions already are automatically entered.
• The contest will close on May 20, 2010, or until at least 30 submissions have been entered (whichever takes longer).  Since the Stuffer Shack is brand new, I’m guessing it’ll probably take a little longer.

What you’ll win:  The winnings have been increased.

• 1st place – the Huge Minotaur Guardian (fits a 3×3 square area).  In addition, you’ll also win a set of Mini Counters and a set of Bloodied Markers.
• 2nd place – A set of Mini Counters and a set of Bloodied Markers.
• 3rd place – Your choice of a set of Mini Counters or a set of Bloodied Markers.
