Free Giveaway: New Exotic Mount: The Tourqen Panther!

I’ve been gaming for years, and in that time my characters or enemies have gotten into many, many fights while riding a mount of some kind (usually a horse). For most gamers, I think that when the fight starts, most of us either forget or gloss over our mounts. This really changed when D&D 4e came out, as we suddenly had several mounts to choose from, and they had actual, usable combat stats (and rules to support mounted combat). Hey, at the very least, a mount lets your character move faster and farther in combat.

So, a couple of years ago I found a way to add mounts to our combat encounters by putting together Horse Minis. They worked out extremely well as they immediately added a new element to the game, enhancing combat and adding tactics (plus, they’re cool-looking). And (of course) I started selling them on Stuffer Shack, because they’re just too awesome not to share.

After a little while I was able to start providing Exotic Mounts, which complimented the Horse Minis perfectly. They cost a little bit more for me to acquire than the horses, but they fill a cool niche that really brings out that high-fantasy feel. I mean, how cool would it be to ride into battle on a griffon, unicorn, drake, great wolf, or even a freaking bison?!

I just made available in our Store a new Exotic Mount, the Tourqen Panther (large-sized, 2-inch base). Brian Liberge thought up the name (I swear), and wrote up a “Steal this Mount” article for tomorrow. This panther is simply too freaking cool. I want to make a new, darker character just so that he can ride into town on a freaking great cat. Personally, my top two favorites are the bison, and this cat.

I have a few other exotic mounts sitting around the office, but I don’t think they’re cool enough to sell on Stuffer Shack (who wants to ride into combat on the back of a giant goat?

The Tourqen Panther Mount is $6.99 (like the other exotic mounts), and shipping in the U.S. is always free. It comes with sticky tack so that your character will stick to the mount’s base securely, and don’t forget that tomorrow Brian will post a “Steal this Mount” article for it (including a stat block). It’s actually kind of cool.

CRITICAL HITS!

Critical Hits wins our RPG Site of the Year award!

Every month we feature a great gaming blog as our Favorite Site of the Month.  It’s only natural that we do the same for the year.  So we set up this free contest, got 26 submissions, and started rating each of these great sites in seven different categories:

  • The usefulness of the blog’s content
  • How well-written the articles are
  • The variety of the articles
  • Site layout and feel
  • Regular posting
  • Entertainment
  • Creativity

We kept it very simple – The judging was done by some of the Stuffer Shack Crew (thank you guys and gals), and each category received either 0 or 1 point.  Scores were added and then averaged, and those five sites that ended up with the highest scores became the finalists.  The field was then narrowed down by our readers to two great sites (Critical Hits and Dungeon’s Master), and our judges were called upon again to decide this neck-and-neck picture-finish.  Both sites are simply fantastic, offering immense value to the gaming community, while doing so in their own unique ways.

If you haven’t been to Critical Hits lately, you should.  They’ve been around the block, and know a thing or three.  Several veteran gamers, experienced in the art of gaming as well as writing about it, populate the great website.  They’re very active at conventions, producing material, seminars, advice, tools, etc. that you simply can’t afford (as a gamer) to bypass.  Really, a great gaming website and definitely deserving of the RPG Site of the Year award.

Announcing our Finalists for RPG Site of the Year!

It amazes me how diverse and different people really are.  I had a lot of preconceived notions about the potential finalists going into this contest, only to be reminded that variety really is the spice of life.

These finalists all had similar scores, but had several contenders biting at their heels.  We had to have a cutoff somewhere, so at 26 total entries, we narrowed it down to the RPG blogs with the top 5 scores.

We opened for submissions one week ago, and there’s only one week remaining.  After that, the judging starts, and no more sites will be admitted.  Entry is free, the requirements are easy to meet, and all blogs are on equal ground from the start.  So when I say that we’re looking for websites, what I really mean is yours!

RPG SITE of the YEAR CONTEST!

Every month (since we opened), we’ve had our “Site of the Month” feature.  It’s where we showcase a great RPG blog, regardless of whether it’s established or brand new.  What’s important is that the blog simply offers great fan-created RPG content.  There’s no science behind which blog ends up being the Site of the Month; it’s just a matter of which articles caught our attention.  It’s completely random and arbitrary;  sometimes we stumble across an amazing article, and sometimes a reader has pointed us there.

Well, Stuffer Shack has been up for a year, so we’re going to have an RPG Site of the Year contest!  With PRIZES ($225+ worth)!  We’ve always had the Site of the Month feature, and always will, so RPG Site of the Year just seems appropriate.  Also, we’ll never have more than one category – RPG Site of the Year is it.

This year, the judging will be done by the Stuffer Shack Crew.  Sites that belong to individual Crew Members are ineligible.

SITES THAT ARE ELIGIBLE

  • Must have a strong focus in Table-Top RPGs
  • Must have been online for at least three months
  • Must be independent, non-corporate, fan-based gaming blogs

WHAT THE JUDGING IS BASED ON

THE SCHEDULE

  • April 11 (Monday): Submissions start today, and will be posted as time permits during the next two weeks.
  • April 25 (Monday): Submission entry ends.  Round 1 of the judging will begin, lasting one week.
  • May 2 (Monday): The finalists will be posted.  Round 2 of the judging will begin, and readers are encouraged to leave comments about why we should pick their favorite of the finalists.  This may or may not sway the judges, but it won’t hurt to try!
  • May 4 (Wednesday): The winner will be announced!

Call it a Shotgun Showdown, because I’m sure the readers and the judges will be working like mad as we approach the end.
